PALATECTOMY

Tumours in the palate can arise from either the mucosa or minor salivary glands within the palate. It can affect either the anterior hard palate or the posterior soft palate. Treatment involves surgical removal of the tumour following oncological principles. Since the palate is a diaphragm between the nose and the mouth, its removal results into nasal twang in voice as well as nasal regurgitation of food. Hence surgical resection must combine appropriate rehabilitation with either palatal prosthesis or pedicled or free flaps.
